UFC 273 Preview

UFC 273 is coming up on April ninth. The UFC packed the main card with some amazing fights with some of MMA’s biggest names and rising stars. Fight Fans are going to love this amazing card after some of the more mediocre cards at the beginning of the year. The first bout of note is between women’s Strawweight fighters in a classic Grappler vs Striker matchup between Mackenzie Dern and Tecia Torres. The next fight of note will be between Russian born Wrestler Khamzat Chimaev and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Gilbert Burns. The card will be topped off by two title fights.

Dern vs. Torres is the first fight fans will like on the main card. Dern is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt who sports an impressive 11-2 record in the Strawweight division.  In her last outing she didn’t come away with a win against Marina Rodriguez, but before that was riding a four fight win streak with wins against Randa Markos, Virna Jandiroba, and Nina Nunes. She hopes to get back into the win Column when she faces off against striking expert Torres. Torres is a Black Belt in Karate and Jhoon-Rhee Taekwondo. She is riding a three fight win streak with wins over Brianna Van Buren, Sam Hughes, and Angela Hill.  This is an awesome matchup I think fans will enjoy.

Chamiev has been taking the MMA world by storm. The Undefeated Russian born fighter has both striking and wrestling skills and has been compared to greats like Khabib Nurmogamedov and Jon Jones. He will really be tested when he faces off against Gilbert Burns who is one of the best Welterweights in the world who’s grappling is through the roof. Burns has an impressive 20-4 record with a win in his last outing when he fought against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Burn’s only loss in the last four years was to current Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman. This is a fight I think fans will love.

The card will be topped off by two title fights; the first one is a matchup between Russian Bantamweight Petr Yan and American grappling ace Aljamain Sterling. These two met last year and Sterling walked away with the title after Yan landed an illegal knee that lead to a disqualification. The pair don’t like each other and have been trading verbal barbs online.  The final title fight will be between Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski and The Korean Zombie. Volkanovski is coming off a win against Brian Ortega and is riding a 20 fight win streak including two successful title defenses. The Korean Zombie is coming off a win against Dan Ige and was a fill in for Featherweight legend Max Holloway.

UFC 273 is an awesome card with some amazing fights. The PPV will be available for purchase on ESPN+

What’s Next For Calvin Kattar?

UFC Fight Night: Kattar v Chikadze

Calvin Kattar put on a fight of the year candidate when he stepped into the Octagon on Saturday night On the first UFC card of the year against Giga Chikadze. These two fighters went to war, and it left many wondering what is next for “The Boston Finisher.” There are some fights that I think make sense. The first would be a matchup between Kattar and submission expert Brian Ortega. One fight that also makes sense is a matchup between Kattar and Yair  Rodríguez. Another possible fight would be between the loser of Volkanovski vs Korean Zombie at UFC 273 in April. I think these fights make sense.

The first fight is between Kattar and Ortega. Ortega is coming off a title loss to UFC Featherweight Champion Volkanovski in our pick for fight of the year for 2021. Ortega, who is a Black Belt under Rener Gracie has an impressive record of 15-2-(1) with nearly half of those coming by way of submission. Now Kattar has a wrestling background but he tends to lean towards a more strike heavy offense with 11 of his 23 wins coming by way of Knockout. This would be an awesome Striker vs Grappler fight and we all know how much the UFC loves to  put on those types of stylistic mismatch of fights.

Yair  Rodríguez also works as an option for Kattar. Rodriguez is coming off a loss to Featherweight Goat Max Holloway. Rodriguez sports an impressive 13–3-(1) record with his only losses in the UFC coming from bouts against the aforementioned Holloway and to Frankie Edgar. Rodriquez is a striker holding a Black Belt in Taekwondo with the majority of his finishes coming by way of knockout. This would be a good fight where Rodriguez would stand up and throw shots at each other until they’re both bruised up or someone gets Knocked out it’d definitely be a fun fight to watch.

The final option for Kattar would be a matchup between him and the winner of Volanovski vs. The Korean Zombie. Let’s be honest I don’t think that Volkanovski will lose his title anytime soon so it is likely it will be a matchup between Kattar and Chan Sung Jung. Jung is like a swiss army knife of fighters with a 3rd dan black belt in Hapkido, 2nd dan black belt in Taekwondo, a Black belt in Judo, and a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This would be an interesting matchup between the two fighters. Because of Jung’s proficiency in all those disciplines.

Calvin Kattar is a solid contender in the Featherweight division. It’ll be interesting to see who he faces next.

Chan Sung Jung who goes by the name “The Korean Zombie” is one of the best Featherweights in The UFC. His road to the UFC is quite fascinating and when he steps into the UFC Octagon he shows everyone why he is where he is in the division with Knockout power and submission skills. Jung Is currently in talks to replace Max Holloway in his title fight against current champ Alexander Volkanovski.

Jung was born on March 17, 1987 in Pohang, South Korea. Due to being a smaller individual he was often bullied and due to this his aunt intervened and took him to a Hapkido gym and he also studied kickboxing. Eventually he would also take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo. Jung would eventually join the Navy and would take up Taekwondo and would eventually take to Sambo which he won a tournament in. At age 20 Jung would take a step towards his destination of the UFC when he would start training MMA.

Jung made his MMA debut in June of 2007 against Hyung-Geol Lee, he’d win by Submission (reverse armbar.) Jung would then fight in the Pancrase: 2007 Korea Neo-Blood Tournament where he’d fight twice in one night winning both fights and the tournament. Jung would then fight in the Korea FC tournament winning three fights in one night and thus winning the tournament. He’d fight seven more fights including two losses in the WEC before ending up in the UFC due to the merger with that organization.

Jung would make his UFC debut against Leonard Garcia and earned the victory by performing the first twister submission in UFC history. He’d then fight Mark Hominick in December of 2011. He’d then face Dustin Poirier winning by Technical Submission (D’Arce choke.)  Jung would then drop a fight to José Aldo, one of the best featherweights in UFC history. He’d then knockout Dennis Bermudez in the first round. In his next fight he’d drop to a Knockout by Yair Rodríguez. Jung would then win back to back fights against Renato Moicano and Frankie Edgar. He’d then face Brian Ortega and would lose by Unanimous decision. In his last outing Jung would face Dan Ige winning by Unanimous decision moving his record to 17-6.

Jung is an ideal Mixed Martial Artist with striking and grappling proficiency. We can’t wait to see him fight again, it would be cool to see him pull off another awesome twister Submission.
